Praziquantel is the drug you need to get rid of tapeworms. I believe it is available over-the-counter. Be very careful to follow instructions. If the medication says for dogs only, do not use it on cats. Cats are not small dogs and using a dosage chart for a dog could cause overdoses in a cat. Medicine safe for a 10 lb dog could be lethal for a 10 lb cat.
Deworming should always be done at least twice, with 3-4 weeks between doses.

A second concept to keep in mind about tick removal is that a dead tick can’t open its mouth-parts to let itself go. This has two important consequences. Firstly, this is the primary reason owners bring me in their pets: they want me to remove the tick’s “head.” (Ticks, by definition, don’t have heads; they have a capitulum.) And the reason the head is still embedded in their pet is because they killed the tick first before trying to remove it.
